Driver’s License Linked to Registration? Yes, applicants for license, permit or identification card may register with SSS. The state may release a list of eligible men to SSS, if it is asked.
Registration Linked to Access to Higher Education? Yes, must be registered to receive state financial aid.
Registration Required for State Employment? Yes, must be registered for state employment.
Montana Code 61-5-107 subsection 5 states that all men between the ages of 15 and 26 must be provided with the opportunity to register with the SSS upon application for a license, permit, or identification card. Those older than 18 who consent will be registered while those younger than 18 who consent will be automatically registered when they reach eligibility. The state, upon request, may provide the SSS with “a list of persons born in specified years who are holders of driver’s licenses for the exclusive purpose of ensuring compliance with the military draft registration requirements.” In such cases the state must notify persons that they have released said information. (Montana Code 61-5-126) One who is not in compliance with the SSS registration may not receive state financial aid or loans for postsecondary education. (Montana Code 20-1-225.) Those not in compliance may not be employed by the state of Montana or its University system. (Montana Code 2-15-130)
